Hiking and Trekking in Romania

 

Romania is the perfect place for all types of hiking and trekking. You can cross high or small mountains, plateau, hills or Danube Delta. A great variety of paths, many with tourist marks, cover the important mountains areas in Romania. In your trip in Romanian Mountains is better to take your tent with you, also I recommend to walk in groups and to use good maps or, better, the company of an experienced leader (visit our rent-a giude offer) .

Orientali Carpathians - not the most spectacular or very high, but their beauty are represented by large wild areas, covered by mysterious woods, many rivers on deep valleys, cross picturesque villages and towns.

1. Gutai Mountains - volcanic mountains, part of the volcanic mountain chain, the longest in Europe. The Gutai rises with more than 1000 m over surrounding Baia Mare depressions, very populated. Many mark paths cross the mountains to Creasta Cocosului rock,Gutai peak (1443m alt.)the highes in the area, Ignis peak (1307m alt.), many soda sources, ski slopes at Mogosa, Cavnic and Izvoarele Complex.

2. Rodnei Mountains - the biggest and highest mountain in the North of Romania, dominate the environs with many peaks over 2000m. The main peaks, Pietrosu(2303m) and Ineu(2279m) are accessible by trekkers only in summer. Glacier  lakes, solitaire peaks and beautiful landscapes around, large forests and waterfalls make this mountain very appreciated. The only problem is there aren't any alpine hut over 1300m alt. The tent is all ways necessaries. In 1993 a large part of Rodna Mountains was included in UNESCO patrimony.

3. Rarau şi Giumalau Mountains - a contrast between beautiful glades and solitary rocks, like Pietrele Doamnei, Piatra Soimului or Popii Raraului. Picturesque, legendary and historical mountains are easy to climb on local roads. The main peaks are  Rarau(1650m) and Giumalau (1857m). Many beautiful path cross the mountains from all the valleys. A modern alpine hut make a easy access to the Rarau high areas. Giumalau is less spectacular and harder to climb, but from the summit you can get one of the greatest landscape from Bucovina land.

4. Calimani Mountains - the highest and the largest volcanic mountains in Carpathians with the summit named Pietrosul peak (2100m). The long ridge offer great landscapes to wild areas with many strange rocks (and their legends), large forests and isolated villages. There is Dracula Land where you can have the chance to discover the mystery! No alpine huts in the highest places required a camping equipment.

5. Ceahlau Mountain - also called the Kogaion - the sacred mountain of Geto - dacians, nowadays equivalent of the Olympus or Athos mountain in Greece. Highly (1907m - Ocolasul Mare peak and 1900m in Toaca peak), picturesque mountain, visited by tourists and Christians pilgrims. Molded by conglomerates, it has the shape of a castle with bizarre towers and forms. Accessible by many mark paths from all the valleys. Two mountain huts make the access on the high plateau more easy. Ocolasu Mare area is preserved area without travelers access.

6. Hasmas Mountains - wild area with the exquisite sights, Bicaz Gorges, Lacu Rosu (Red Lake). Bicaz Gorges are the most impressive gorges in all Carpathians: big walls, rock towers, caves... There is a paradise for climbing, trekking, mountain biking. The highest peak in this mountains is Hasmasu Mare peak - 1793 m. Here spring two legendary rivers: Olt and Mures. Some problems with orienteering on the large meadows.

7. Ciomatu Mountain - a small mountain, but with a beauty spot - the only volcanic lake in Romania - Sf. Ana lake. In this beautiful area, with ecological reserves, are numerous resorts and spas, well known around the world. The Saint Ana (Sfanta Ana) - Tinovul Mohos area and Balvanyos area are easy accessible by roads and paths.

8. Ciucas Mountains - solitaire rocks with bizarre aspects also large forests and meadows full of flowers in spring and summer. Ciucas is a fascinating and impressive mountain with the highest peak - Ciucas (1954m) dominating the surrounding. Easier to climb from Muntele Rosu hut and from Cheia resort.

9. Piatra Mare Mountain - a popular mountain near Brasov city, well know by tourists . Piatra Mare with 1844 m peak, offer to travelers: gorges, canyons (7 Scari), walls (Prapastia Ursilor, Piatra Sura), caves, ski slopes, many resorts (Predeal, Timisul de Sus). The landscapes from the Piatra Mare summit is amazing. Accessible in all the seasons. Now the Piatra Mare hut from 1600m alt. was reopened.

10. Postavaru Mountain - very popular mountain well know by all type of people. There is the most frequented ski area from Romanian Carpathians. Also many resorts, many facility access, cable transport, all near to Brasov city. Can find the greatest landscapes in the highest peak Postavaru 1799 m and Tampa Mountain near Brasov city. Also don't meets: gorges (Rasnov), rock walls (Irving), beautiful glades (Poiana Mica, Poiana Trei Fetite).

Meridionali Carpathians Mountains also colled Transylvanian Alps- the highest area, the most massive and spectacular from all Romanian Carpathians.

11. Bucegi Mountains - hold the first place in the preferences of the Romanian and foreign travelers. This popularity has a reason in the relief, and also in the presence of resorts, cable transport and altitude chalets. The highest peak - Omu,2505m. On the high plateau are many alpine huts for trekkers and climbers. From east, north and north west Bucegi offer spectacular rock walls, dominated the lower environs.

12. Piatra Craiului Mountains - one of the most beautiful and appreciated mountains from all Carpathians. It is like a huge blade of limestone, reaching 2239 m altitude in the peak La Om. The tourist paths are difficult and insecure. Also here are many unmarked paths very picturesque but hard to follow. Some shelters can be used in difficult moments.

13. Fagaras Mountains - surnamed the Alps of Transylvania, the highest mountains in Romania. Sufficient chalets and shelters to make easy the access to the peaks. The most important peaks are: Moldoveanu 2544 m and Negoiu 2535 m, accessible on difficult tourist paths. 77 km of main ridge, is a challenge for many travelers. In clear days you can see all the Transylvania.

24. Iezer-Papusa Mountains - are close by Fagaras and Piatra Craiului Mountains and rize over 2400m alt. In north side are few small glacial valleys and lakes. The higest peaks are Iezerul Mare (2461m) and Papusa (2391m) peaks covered by large meadows. The access to Iezer Papusa Mountains is from south side.

25. Cozia Mountain - is the last fortress for Olt to river in his route to Danube river and Black Sea. It is a small mountain with the highest point in Cozia peak (1668m) but rocky and spectacular with a great diversity. Olt river melt in west side of Cozia Mountain a beautiful narrow frqvented by many travelers.Inside of the mountains is a reach fauna and vegatation, a nice place to built during the centuries few issolated ermitages and monasteries: Turnu Monastery and Stanisoara Monastery.

14. Cindrel Mountains - a high but leisurely mountains (Cindrel peak - 2244 m), two beautiful glacier lakes (Iezerul Mare, Iezerul Mic), also splendid glades, massive forests around the landscapes. Easy access to main ridge are from Paltinis resort at over 1400m alt.

15. Parang Mountains - the second mountains (varying with altitude), from the Romanian Carpathians (Parangul Mare- 2519 m). Offer large landscapes around, beautiful glacier lakes, massive but accessible ridge and peaks, spectacular gorges with big walls, caves and numerous monasteries. In winter is a lovely ski area. No alpine hut over 1600m.

16. Sureanu (Sebes) Mountains - small and medium altitudes, reaching the maximum of 2130 m (in the peak of Patru). Worldwide famous for the great number of treasures discovered in the ancient Dacian - roman citadels from here. Is also an important carstic area with large cave, gorges and rock walls. Serious problems with orienteering.

17. Retezat Mountains - divided in two distinct regions: Retezatul Mare, peaks of over 2500 m altitude, granite (Peleaga peak 2509m) and Retezatul Mic, peaks of maximum 2200m altitude, limestone. A great number of glacier lake are in Retezatul Mare, about 80.  There are the largest and the deepest in Romania. For many nature lover, Retezat is the most beautiful mountains in Romania. No alpine hut over 1700m.

18. Mehedinţi - Cerna Mountains - a picturesque region, with many gorges, waterfalls, walls, caves. Try in spring when the wild lilac blossoms. A labyrinth area at low altitude Some problems with orientating.

Banatului Mountains region - a lower place with many limestone areas, very spectacular. There is the Danube Defile and many others small gorges.

19. Semenic Mountains - the highest mountain in this area (1443m Semenic peak). A massive mountain less spectacular but very popular in Banat, with many resorts and pleasure lakes. Easy access on roads, path and cable-chair.

20. Anina Mountains - considered the most beautiful mountains in Banat, a karstic region, very appreciated. Many spectacular caves - Nera, Caras, Minis, Garlistei, canyons, impressive rocks, waterfalls. Some path are difficult and herd to follow.

Apuseni Mountains - the mystery of Orientali Carpathians combined with very spectacular karst areas.

21. Trascau Mountains - small altitude, principal attractions are limestone areas with impressive gorges (Turzii and Rameti), caves, big rocks (Ampoitei, Coltii Tarcaului, Bedeleu) and isolated and very picturesque villages.

22. Bihor - Vladeasa Mountains - Padis Plateau from this mountains is the most important caving area in Romania. Wild forests, impressive walls and waterfalls, isolated villages, large and high glades, all beautiful landscapes, make this mountain  the most appreciated in Apuseni area. The highest peaks: Curcubata Mare (1849m) and Vladeasa (1836m). Some mountain huts are in Vladeasa, Padis and Vartop-Arieseni areas. Many path are hard to follow. Problems with orienteering.

Dobrudja Plateau hills, maybe older then Scotland or Vosgi Mountains. Is more like hills but interesting and beautiful.

23.Munţii Măcin - a solitary mountain, isolated from Carpathians by Danube. Very low altitudes - only 476 m (the peak La Greci), granite walls, spectacular ridges. Pricopanului ridge is a authentically mountain ridge with, offering a great landscape to Danube river and the lakes villages and towns from the valley.
