Ski in Carpathian Mountains (Romania)

Romania and Andorra are the most affordable ski destination in Europe. First, in Romania the prices are lower, and second, the snow last for 4-5 months in the Carpathians, more than in Bulgaria, Turkey or Greek mountains (3-4 months). The avalanche danger are, also, lower then in Alps, Pirinei, or Caucasus. The wind and winter temperature are more tolerable than in Russia or Scandinavia. The alpine climate are invigorating. And now the services and the tourism security are improving.

The beauty of Romania winters are legendary. The traditions of the Christmas, New Year or Boboteaza (The Baptize of Christ) are very special, unique around the world.

The most important area for winter sports is Prahova Valley with many beautiful resorts and slopes. But in Romania you can go in a lot of other places around the Carpathians.

3. Vatra Dornei Spa (Calimani Mountains) - 800 m alt. The snow last from December to March. Slopes popularity and quality - medium.
4. Durau Resort (Ceahlau Mountains) - 800 m alt. The snow last from December to March. Slopes popularity and quality - minimum to medium.
5. Lacu Rosu Resort (Hasmas Mountains) - 980m alt. The snow last from December to April. Isolated resort in a very beautiful area. In winter can be difficult access. Slopes popularity and quality - minimum to medium.
6. Izvorul Muresului Resort (Harghita Mountains) - 875m alt. The snow last from December to March. A resort recommended for young people. Easy access in winter. Slopes popularity and quality - minimum to medium.
7. Harghita Bai Resort and Harghita Madaras (Harghita Mountains) - 1345m alt. and 1671m alt. In winter the access for Harghita Madaras is difficult. An amazing area with many mineral sources. The snow last from December to April (or May in Harghita Madaras). Slopes popularity and quality - medium.
8. Poiana Brasov Resort (Postavaru Mountain) - 1020m alt. The most appreciated ski resort in Romania. Easy access, good services. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - very appreciated.
9. Predeal Resort (Baiului and Predealului mountains) - 1040m alt. One of the most appreciated ski resort in Romania. Easy access, good services. The snow last from December to March. Slopes popularity and quality - very appreciated.
10. Azuga Resort (Baiului Mountains) - 960m alt. A new ski resort in Romania, more and more appreciated by winter sports lovers. Slopes international homologated and good services. The snow last from December to March. Slopes popularity and quality - very appreciated.
11. Sinaia Spa (Bucegi Mountains) - 800 - 1000m alt. Also one of the most appreciated resort for ski in Romania and in Europe. Easy access and good traditions in services. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - very appreciated.
12. Balea Cascada and Balea Lac Complex (Fagaras Mountains) - 1234m alt. and 2027m alt. A spectacular ski area in the highest Romanian mountains. Looking similarly to the Alps. From Balea Lac access only with cable-car (six months by year). The snow from November/December to May. Slopes popularity and quality - appreciated.
13. Paltinis Resort (Cindrel Mountains) - 1450m alt. Beautiful winter, easy access and good services. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - appreciated.
14. Parangul Mic Complex (Parang Mountains) - 1100m alt. A great place for ski, with many long slopes. Poor services, but affordable, also easy access. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - appreciated.
15. Straja Complex (Valcan Mountains) - 1445m alt. An affordable place for ski with many slopes. Difficult access in some winters. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - appreciated.
16. Muntele Mic Complex (Muntele Mic) - 1500m alt. Poor services. In winter the access is only by chair-lift. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - minimum to medium
17. Semenic Resort (Semenic Mountains) - 1400m alt. One of the most appreciated resort in South-West Romania. The snow last from November to April. Slopes popularity and quality - very appreciated.
18. Vartop - Arieseni Resort (Bihor Mountains) - 850m alt. and 1140m alt. New resort with great perspectives. In the future this area will be the most important ski area in all Apuseni Mountains. 19. Baisoara Resort (Muntele Mare) - 1400m alt. An area frequented by people from Cluj city. The snow last from December to April. Slopes popularity and quality - medium.
